The Paracelsus String Quartet was founded in 1985 by medical doctors and students, in keeping with the old Viennese tradition of close ties between medicine and music.  The best-documented case is the close friendship between Johannes Brahms and Theodor Billroth, who, in addition to being a celebrated surgeon, was also an excellent violist.  Many of Brahms' most famous chamber music works were first performed privately in Billroth's home, with the two friends Brahms and Billroth both playing.

The Paracelsus Quartet's first public performance met with great acclaim; this encouraged the quartet to begin performing professionally.

In recent years, the Paracelsus Quartet has travelled to numerous cities throughout Europe, including Paris, London, Munich, Geneva and Istanbul.  The Quartet has also been invited to international festivals such as the Festival de Fenetrange (France), Con Anima (Austria), Festival Cala Ratjada and Hivern a Mallorca (Spain). 

In Vienna, the ensemble has had a regular concert series in the Bösendorfersaal since 1989, and has played in the Brahms-Saal of the Musikverein several times since 1996. The Ensemble has recorded 7 CDs till now.
